Claude Code starts at $20/month with Claude Pro. Max 5x is $100/month, and Max 20x is $200/month. Claude Free does not include Claude Code.
Start with Pro for your first project. Pay for Max when usage limits regularly interrupt your work. You do not need the $200 plan to build an app.

Is Claude Code free?
No. Installing it is free, but using it requires a supported account with model access. Claude's Free plan does not include Claude Code.

Claude Pro at $20: the place to start
Pro includes Claude Code. Sign in with the Claude account attached to your subscription; you do not need a second coding subscription. A Console/API login uses a different billing route. Account options.
Choose Pro if you are learning, building a side project or making occasional changes to an app. Use it for a real task before upgrading: build a page, fix a bug or add a feature.
Annual Pro costs $200 up front, a $40 saving over twelve monthly payments. Stay monthly until you know you will use it throughout the year.
When Max 5x at $100 makes sense
Max 5x costs $80 more per month than monthly Pro. Consider it when you repeatedly reach Pro's allowance before finishing work you need to do.
Keep track of those interruptions for a week. If limits rarely stop you, keep Pro. If they regularly break up productive sessions, the extra capacity may justify the upgrade.
More allowance will not fix unclear instructions or broken code. Check what is causing the interruption before paying to solve it.
Is Max 20x worth $200?
Choose Max 20x only if you already need more capacity than Max 5x provides. It adds another $100 to the monthly bill and still has usage limits.
Check which limit you are hitting and how it changes between plans. Anthropic describes Max tiers relative to Pro's allowance, not as a guaranteed number of finished coding tasks. Max usage and billing.
For a beginner, Pro is the better starting point. For someone whose paid work repeatedly stops at a limit, Max deserves a closer look.
Why paid plans still have usage limits
Claude has session and weekly limits. Usage depends on the model, effort level, conversation length and complexity of the work. Claude chat and Claude Code share your allowance. How the limits work.
There is no dependable conversion from a subscription price to a fixed number of prompts. Renaming a button and investigating a large codebase consume different amounts of work.
Run /usage in Claude Code to check your allowance. A session's estimated token cost is not automatically an extra bill for a subscriber. Confirm charges in your account's billing records. Claude Code cost tracking.
What happens when you run out?
Wait for the relevant limit to reset, upgrade if you need more regular capacity, or enable paid usage credits for additional work.
Usage credits cost extra. Manage them in Settings > Usage, set a monthly spending limit, and check whether auto-reload is enabled. Usage credit rules.
For example, monthly Pro plus $15 of charged usage credits totals $35 before tax. Whether that is enough for your project depends on what you run.
Max API credits: what they cover
Eligible Max 5x subscribers can claim $100 in monthly Claude Platform API credits; Max 20x includes $200. Pro is not eligible. New subscribers must wait seven days and link a Console organization. Unused credits expire each billing cycle.
These credits are for building on the Claude Platform. They do not pay for interactive Claude Code sessions or extra subscription usage. Some API-key-based SDK and claude -p use qualifies under separate conditions. Full API credit rules.
If you only use Claude Code to build a website, do not count the API credit as money off your coding subscription. If your app also calls Claude's API, compare the benefit with your actual API spending.
Which plan should you choose?
Start with monthly Pro. Move to Max 5x when limits regularly stop useful work. Choose Max 20x when the lower tier still cannot cover your needs and the extra $100 makes sense for your workload.
Keep three costs separate: the subscription, optional usage credits, and API spending. Check all three before deciding that a plan fits your budget.
