What changed
GPT-6.1 Sol is an upgrade to GPT-6 Sol that OpenAI says nearly matches GPT-6 Astra on agentic coding, computer use and professional work at one-fifth of Astra's standard token price. OpenAI's model docs list a 1,050,000-token context window (922,000 max input), 128,000 max output tokens, text and image input with text output, five reasoning effort levels from low to max, and an April 30, 2026 knowledge cutoff.
Access and availability
Available in ChatGPT Work and Codex, and in the OpenAI API as gpt-6.1-sol through the Responses, Chat Completions and Batch endpoints. Tool calling requires the Responses API.
Official access documentationPricing
$2.00 per million input tokens, $0.10 per million cached input tokens and $10.00 per million output tokens; above 272K input tokens, $4.00 input, $0.20 cached input and $15.00 output per million tokens.
Official pricingWhat you can build
Use GPT-6.1 Sol for everyday coding and agent workloads and escalate to GPT-6 Astra only when tasks fail, since Sol costs $2 input and $10 output per million tokens versus Astra's $10 and $50.
GPT-6.1 Sol vs GPT-6 AstraLimitations
Output is text only, with no audio or video support, and it is not available on Realtime, fine-tuning or Assistants endpoints. Requests over 272K input tokens are billed at higher long-context rates.
