Claude Sonnet 5.5

Anthropic released Claude Sonnet 5.5, the second model in the Claude 5.5 family, positioned as a faster and lower-cost complement to Opus 5.5 for everyday coding and document work. It is priced the same as Sonnet 5 at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens and generates output more than 30% faster.

What changed

Claude Sonnet 5.5 keeps Sonnet 5's price but, per Anthropic, generates output more than 30% faster and costs up to 30% less per task because it uses fewer tokens. It has a 1M-token context and 128K max output. Anthropic reports 70.6% on Terminal-Bench 4.0 versus 10.3% for Sonnet 5 and 80.1% on OSWorld 2.1 versus 57.0%. Cache reads drop to $0.10 per million tokens from $0.20.

What you can build

Try Sonnet 5.5 as a faster default for well-scoped coding and document tasks, and measure cost per finished task on your own workloads to confirm the claimed token savings.

Limitations

Anthropic says Opus 5.5 remains stronger for complex open-ended work, and Max effort can lower some coding scores through out-of-scope changes and timeouts. Higher-risk cybersecurity requests fall back to Sonnet 5, and thinking cannot be fully disabled (only switched to between_tools).
