What changed

Claude Opus 5.5 is the first Claude 5.5 model, priced below Opus 5 at $4 input and $20 output per million tokens (down from $5 and $25). Anthropic says it costs about 40% less to run than Opus 5 on typical workloads. It has a 1M-token context and 128K max output. Anthropic reports 66.4% on Terminal-Bench 4.0 versus 52.3% for Opus 5, and 81.8% on OSWorld 2.1 versus 74.0%. A fast mode runs up to 2.5x faster at higher prices.

What you can build

Run the same long coding or knowledge-work job on Opus 5.5 and Opus 5, then compare total token cost and whether the cheaper cache-read rate actually shows up in the bill.

Limitations

Most cybersecurity tasks are re-routed to Opus 4.8 unless the user is verified, and biology safeguards can flag some requests. Thinking can no longer be switched off, and Anthropic notes some benchmark scores were reduced by production safeguards.
