What changed

Claude Haiku 5.5 replaces Haiku 4.5 as Anthropic's small, low-cost model and is the first Haiku with an adjustable effort setting (low to max). It has a 1M token context window and 128K max output. Anthropic reports large gains over Haiku 4.5, including 72.4% versus 15.7% on an OSWorld 2.1 subset and 45.9% versus 10.2% on Humanity's Last Exam without tools, and says it costs about 75% less to run on average than Haiku 4.5.

Access and availability

Available via the Claude API as claude-haiku-5-5, and on Amazon Bedrock (anthropic.claude-haiku-5-5), Google Cloud and Microsoft Foundry. It accepts text and image input and returns text.

What you can build

Compare Haiku 5.5 with a larger model on representative classification, summarization, or coding-subagent tasks, tracking quality, latency, and cost before routing production work.

Limitations

Anthropic says Sonnet 5.5 and Opus 5.5 are better for complex agentic coding, and that its updated tokenizer uses slightly more tokens per task. Prompts over 100K tokens are billed at five times the base rate, and cybersecurity safeguards block penetration testing and similar techniques.
